It is 1916, a time when women's rights are far from equal and wives were required to be submissive to their husbands. Andorra Hamilton, a beautiful young seamstress, finds herself much in demand by wealthy clients, as she offers her exclusive couture services while a working guest in their homes.

Cynthia McFarland, attractive and gracious wife of the extremely wealthy, albeit licentious and abusive, Richard McFarland, finds herself in a desperately compromising position. He wants the requisite wife in an attempt to enter politics. She wants to free herself from a brutal relationship. Having absolutely no legal recourse, Cynthia attempts to come to terms with the situation. At Richard's offhand suggestion, Cynthia hires the highly recommended seamstress to outfit her for the upcoming social season and political functions.

Andorra takes up residence and quickly meets a young attorney, Steven Blackwell, an invited dinner guest of the McFarlands. He is intensely attracted to her and determines to win her affections. Colorful counterparts, live-in help, Brigid and Patrick Ryan, have left behind the Troubles of their native Ireland, but have their own personal problems. They witness the dark unraveling of the secret lives of everyone in the McFarland mansion and learn that not all things are meant to be mended.
