When Kate returns to the mother and daughter she abandoned 15 years ago, she learns that picking up where you left off is never easy. Her mother, Harper, and daughter, August, have a bond between them stronger than anything Kate has ever had with either of them. Raised by her grandmother, Harper is the only mother August has ever known.

Returning on the night of August's first date with a boy, both Kate and Harper are forced to confront issues of the past they have been trying to suppress. Both have had children out of wedlock which has affected the way they lived their lives. With August standing on the fringe of adulthood, all three women must examine what results from the choices we make in life.
