In 17th century Paris at a time of political turbulence, there lived a flamboyant, swashbuckling, gallant hero. Blessed with a nose 'splendiferous' the not very attractive Cyrano de Bergerac loves passionately, but silently. The subject of that love was his childhood friend, the beautiful Roxanne, who only had eyes for another, the very 'elegant' but inarticulate Christian de Neuvilette.

Supremely 'eloquent' Cyrano is asked by Roxanne's Duenna to guide Christian's love to Roxnne, a task Cyrano achieves brilliantly through his 'lettres d'amour' faithfully and safely delivered on Christian's behalf, even on the field of battle. In his mission Cyrano, unable to restrain himself in doing the Duenna's bidding, pours out all his passion, heart and soul, as if Roxanne was his. But alas...

Christian and Roxanne are married. But there is a war going on and Christian becomes an early casualty, shot dead, causing the distraught Roxanne and her Duenna to enter Holy Orders in Paris, Roxanne taking with her Christians's last bloodstained letter.

Too late she discovers that the very eloquent words, the passion she had fallen in love with belonged in fact to the heart and soul of Cyrano, true love's ultimate tragic victim, and it was with Cyrano's heart that Roxanne's true love lay all the time.

Musicians Rejoice! And... the music gives singers opportunities to flex their dramatic and vocal muscles, to sing high and low without grovelling in the laryngeal nether regions. A children's chorus gets to process a la Sound of Music and bring it all to a celestial finale, Singers Rejoice!

Patricia Kelly, The Australia, October 7, 1994

Melody after Memorable Melody -- intricate and breathtaking in scope. He is a genuine master!

Iain MacDonald, The Argus, Capetown SA, October 13, 1994

It has some truly memorable and melodic music which can stand on its own, the mark of a good musical.

Peta Koch, Courier Mail, October 17, 1994

Australia has an extraordinary composer in David Reeves. What he has done with Cyrano is beautiful.

Mary Nemeth, Australian Financial Review, October 17, 1994
The music feels the story. That is the strength of Reeves' music. It is melodious, it has strong rhythmic pulse, but above all, it reflects the mood of the words. I particularly warmed to Roxanne's song "About You."
