When young Harris Chandler inherits his father's plantation, Remus, Toby, Sarah and Janie, all the friends of his childhood, suddenly become his property. Simon, the wicked overseer, is determined to keep the slaves in line and destroy their ties to Harris.

When Harris meets his friends in the woods to act out his favorite Br'er Rabbit stories, things just aren't the way they used to be. When his best friend, Toby, decides to run away, Harris discovers that the Br'er Rabbit stories are more than just fun, they contain important codes and secrets that could save his best friend's life.
