Aspects of Love is a Tony-nominated musical in two acts, which follows the changing relationships between three generations of a family and their artistic companions, set against a background of post-war France and Italy.

Notable numbers from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s moving score include the ballad “Anything But Lonely” and “Love Changes Everything,” which was a huge hit for Michael Ball, who starred in the original production in London and on Broadway.

With five principals of varying ages and an expandable singing and dancing ensemble, Aspects of Love is an ideal show for colleges, amateur groups and professional theatres. However, the chamber opera’s adult subject matter may make it unsuitable for youth performance.

REVIEWS:

"Trevor Nunn’s very fine production is a rare example of theatrical intimacy succeeding in large-scale circumstances… You will want to see this show not because of its showbiz hype, but because there are new creative forces at work here which may yet define the lyric theatre of the future."

 Michael Coveney, Financial Times

"The daring shown here tonight deserves to win our admiration."

 Jack Tinker, Daily Mail

"The musical texture becomes lively and varied and the stage starts to flood with real emotion…(Trevor Nunn)…creates both images of rapturous gaiety…and moments of desolating sadness. Mr. Lloyd Webber shows a capacity to reach emotions that other composers do not touch."

 Michael Billington, The Guardian

"A lyrical, heart-breakingly romantic chamber piece...Aspects is a cynical, edgy and at the same time charming piece...a magical energy of music and mood that could well lead to a whole new world of intelligent and intimate adult singalongs."

 Sheridan Morley, Herald Tribune

Premiere Production:

Aspects of Love made its world premiere at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre on April 17, 1989, where it ran for 1,325 performances. The musical’s company included Ann Crumb as Rose Vibert and Michael Ball as Alex Dillingham.

The main cast members transferred with the show to Broadway the following spring, where it opened at the Broadhurst Theatre. Aspects of Love garnered six Tony nominations, including nods for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. The New York production ran for 377 performances.

Later incarnations include a U.K. tour in 2007, a South African production in 2009, a critically-acclaimed run at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory in 2010 and an engagement in Holland in 2013.
