The CATS Abridged Edition has been developed with junior groups and schools in mind and is available to groups with a performing age of 14 and under. The Abridged Edition backing track is approximately 75 minutes in length and has been developed with younger Jellicles in mind. The CDs provide the flexibility to edit the show to a suitable length for the performance age group and aid the learning and rehearsal process.

A true musical theatre phenomenon, CATS opened at London's New London Theatre on May 11, 1981 and ran for a record-setting 21 years. CATS' London success was nearly matched on Broadway where it ran at the Wintergarden Theatre for just over 18 years.

This means you are not permitted to reproduce any elements of the directions, choreography, designs or other creative elements of the original 1981 London production of the Play or video production or any previous professional production of the Play except for the music and the lyrics. You are permitted to set your production in a rubbish dump, however it must be your own design of a dump but you are not obliged to set CATS in a rubbish dump. For example, it could be anywhere that CATS hang out – an alleyway, rooftops, etc.


Premiere Production:

CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The groundbreaking production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical.

The following year, CATS opened at New York’s Winter Garden Theatre, its home for the next 18 years, garnering seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show returned to Broadway in 2016, where it had a successful pre-tour run at the Neil Simon Theatre.

CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 16 languages, and seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. The original Broadway cast recording won the Grammy Award for Best Cast Album.

Lloyd Webber’s magnificent musical score includes the poignant hit song “Memory,” which has been recorded by over 150 artists from Barbra Streisand to Liberace to Barry Manilow.
