THE SIRE DE MALDROIT'S DOOR

Alain Sire de Maletroit has set a clever trap to capture the man who is sending love letters to his beautiful niece Blanche. Near her room, he has constructed a trick door that locks shut once someone has walked through it. As the play begins, Denis de Beaulieu, who has never set eyes on Blanche, leans against the trick door as he rushes to escape an enemy, and he falls into the Sire deMaletroit's house. Alain assumes that Denis is the lover who is compromising his niece's reputation, so he tells Denis that he has until dawn to marry Blanche or he will be executed. Blanche, truly in love with her letter-writing captain, is thrown in with the stranger Denis and together they must find a way out of the dilemma. Around the themes of love or death, the comic-drama plays itself out to an exciting climax—and a happy ending. Each of the three roles is superb, and the dialogue is often lyrically beautiful. One int. set.
