'her holiness' - the life and times of Mary MacKillop

'her holiness' is about the life and times of Mary MacKillop and her struggles to overcome the male dominated hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

* * To celebrate Mary MacKillop becoming Australia's first saint, we have 20 copies of the script, signed by both authors, to give away. All you need to do is send an email to 'enquiries@originmusic.com.au' with the subject line "her holiness signed script giveaway".

One hundred and forty years after Mary MacKillop's death, another feisty young Australian woman, Anna Detweiller, goes to Rome with a passionate mission to seek an audience with Pop Benedict XVI in order to push for the final steps of Mary MacKillop's case to be Australia's first saint.

But Anna has a few boundaries to cross. Her conversion from Christianity to Islam is not guaranteed to thrill the German pontiff, but when, owing to a terror alert, the American President is forced to cancel his visit to the Pontiff, Benedict XVI has some rare time on his hands and, captivated by the young visitor from Australia, grants her a longer audience than either expected.

What begins as a confrontational conversation quickly becomes a detective story with the Pope as an unlikely sleuth.

This play combines humour and drama in dealing with life and death battles and survival in Australia - then and now.

Its topicality and relevance need no explanation, though the double narrative time frame involving Mary and Anna, together with the sympathetic presence of Pope Benedict XVI as a character on stage, certainly contribute to the story's impact. You have if not a blessed trinity, then at least a dramatic trio guaranteed to ignite theatrical fireworks and further interest in and knowledge of, St Mary MacKillop.

"her holiness" is by Justin Fleming and Melvyn Morrow, both well known Sydney theatre practitioners.

Justin Fleming is one of Australia's leading playwrights, known for his plays 'The Cobra', 'Harold in Italy', 'Burnt Piano', 'Coup d'Etat' and 'The Department Store'. He has also written the librettos for opera and musical theatre in Australia and the UK.

Melvyn Morrow is a co-writer of the hit musicals 'SHOUT! - The Legend of the Wild One' and 'Dusty - The Original Pop Diva'. His musical 'A Song To Sing O' toured Australia starring at different times Anthony Warlow and Dennis Olsen. Morrow was described by one critic as "our very own W S Gilbert" for his witty updates of the Savoy operas for Simon Gallaher's Essgee Productions and Opera Australia. He was also a member of the creative team which delivered the museum at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney.
